FAQs
Find clear, compassionate answers about starting counselling, what to expect, and the practical details to begin with confidence.
What to expect
-
What can I expect in my first counselling session?
Starting therapy can feel intimidating, but it’s a brave first step — and you should feel proud for taking it. In our first counselling session, we’ll begin building a safe, supportive connection. We’ll go over consent, confidentiality, and how counselling works. Then we’ll explore what brought you here and what you hope to gain from therapy. There’s no pressure to share everything — we go at your pace, and your comfort always comes first.
-
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
If you’ve been wondering, “Is therapy right for me?”, the answer might be yes if:
- You feel anxious, depressed, burnout, or overwhelmed
- You're navigating identity, cultural expectations, or relationship issues
- You want to better understand your emotions and patterns
At The Healing Cove Counselling in Vancouver, I support adults in building self-awareness and emotional resilience. You don’t need a diagnosis or crisis—just a willingness to explore and grow.
If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply curious about your patterns and emotions, therapy can be a powerful place to explore that. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit. Whether you're navigating anxiety, identity challenges, relationship difficulties, cultural pressures, or life transitions, therapy offers a space for reflection, healing, and clarity. If you're longing to feel more aligned with yourself, therapy may be the next right step.
-
How long does therapy usually take?
The length of individual therapy varies. Some people come short-term for a specific issue like anxiety or stress, while others engage in longer-term counselling for deeper healing and self-discovery. Together, we’ll tailor the process to your goals and check in regularly to ensure it’s working for you.

Finding the Right Fit
-
How do I choose the right therapist?
Choosing a therapist is personal. Look for someone whose approach, values, and communication style align with yours. I encourage clients to read about my background, therapeutic philosophy, and book a consultation to see if we’re a good fit.
-
What’s the difference between a counsellor, therapist, psychologist, and psychiatrist?
These terms can be confusing, so here’s a breakdown:
- A counsellor or therapist (like myself) provides talk therapy and emotional support.
- A psychologist can diagnose and treat mental health disorders using psychotherapy and assessments.
- A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication and diagnose mental illness.
At The Healing Cove, I offer individual counselling for adults in Vancouver and online, blending science-backed approaches with warmth and cultural sensitivity.
-

Is online counselling effective?
Yes—online therapy has been shown to be just as effective as in-person counselling for many concerns. I offer secure, virtual sessions for adults across BC, so you can access support from the comfort of your home. This is especially helpful if you’re juggling a busy schedule, parenting, or prefer privacy.
